Description: Their loud calls woke Kenneth Dean on the morning of Saturday July 19 2008 in Gresham Texas. He went outside I saw the two large woodpeckers. Nearly as large as a crow the Pileated Woodpecker is the largest woodpecker in most of North America. Its loud ringing calls and huge rectangular excavations in dead trees announce its presence in forests across the continent. The photographs in this gallery were taken by reporter Kenneth Dean.
