- Description: The Audie Murphy/American Cotton Museum was founded in 1987 and is widely known as home to the Audie L. Murphy Hunt County Veteran’s Exhibit, displaying a large collection of military memorabilia relating to Audie Murphy and other Hunt County veterans, as well as many temporary local history exhibits. Standing at only 5'5" and 120 pounds, Audie Leon Murphy, during his years of active service (1942 - 1945), received every decoration of valor that the United States had to offer, equalling 33 awards and decorations including the Medal of Honor. In 1949 Audie became a critically acclaimed actor starring in 26 films. In the 25 years that Audie spent in Hollywood, he made 44 feature films. Audie Murphy was an accomplished songwriter producing 17 compositions. Recording artists such as Dean Martin, Eddy Arnold, Charley Pride, Porter Waggoner, Jerry Wallace, Roy Clark, Harry Nilsson and others have recorded Audie’s songs.
